Efficient Learning of Simplices

چکیده
We show an efficient algorithm for the following problem: Given uniformly random points from an arbitrary n-dimensional simplex, estimate the simplex. The size of the sample and the number of arithmetic operations of our algorithm are polynomial in n. This answers a question of Frieze, Jerrum and Kannan Frieze et al. (1996). Our result can also be interpreted as efficiently learning the intersection of n + 1 half-spaces in R in the model where the intersection is bounded and we are given polynomially many uniform samples from it. Our proof uses the local search technique from Independent Component Analysis (ICA), also used by Frieze et al. (1996). Unlike these previous algorithms, which were based on analyzing the fourth moment, ours is based on the third moment. We also show a direct connection between the problem of learning a simplex and ICA: a simple randomized reduction to ICA from the problem of learning a simplex. The connection is based on a known representation of the uniform measure on a simplex. Similar representations lead to a reduction from the problem of learning an affine transformation of an n-dimensional `p ball to ICA.

An Efficient Representation for Filtrations of Simplicial Complexes
A filtration over a simplicial complex K is an ordering of the simplices of K such that all prefixes in the ordering are subcomplexes of K. Filtrations are at the core of Persistent Homology, a major tool in Topological Data Analysis. In order to represent the filtration of a simplicial complex, the entire filtration can be appended to any data structure that explicitly stores all the simplices...
متن کاملPossibilities of Recursive GPU Mapping for Discrete Orthogonal Simplices
The problem of parallel thread mapping is studied for the case of discrete orthogonal m-simplices. The possibility of a O(1) time recursive block-space map λ : Z 7→ Z is analyzed from the point of view of parallel space efficiency and potential performance improvement. The 2-simplex and 3-simplex are analyzed as special cases, where constant time maps are found, providing a potential improvemen...
متن کاملCompact Representations of Simplicial Meshes in Two and Three Dimensions
We describe data structures for representing simplicial meshes compactly while supporting online queries and updates efficiently. Our data structure requires about a factor of five less memory than the most efficient standard data structures for triangular or tetrahedral meshes, while efficiently supporting traversal among simplices, storing data on simplices, and insertion and deletion of simp...
متن کاملSweep Algorithms for Constructing Higher-Dimensional Constrained Delaunay Triangulations
I discuss algorithms for constructing constrained Delaunay triangulations (CDTs) in dimensions higher than two. If the CDT of a set of vertices and constraining simplices exists, it can be constructed in O(nvns) time, where nv is the number of input vertices and ns is the number of output d-simplices. The CDT of a starshaped polytope can be constructed in O(ns log nv) time, yielding an efficien...
متن کاملDiscrete restricted Boltzmann machines
We describe discrete restricted Boltzmann machines: probabilistic graphical models with bipartite interactions between visible and hidden discrete variables. Examples are binary restricted Boltzmann machines and discrete näıve Bayes models. We detail the inference functions and distributed representations arising in these models in terms of configurations of projected products of simplices and ...
